- The names are public instruments to enhance the quality characteristics of agricultural products intended for human consumption , from certain geographical areas.The purpose of names is to protect the name , consolidated over time , typical products of certain areas so that it can not be used to similar products with similar characteristics but obtained in other places.The name , the boundaries of the geographical area of production, the quality and the production methods of a designation shall be governed by public authority and responsibility to the farmers through their organizations , the task of activating the procedures aimed at the recognition of some typical products , or of those productions that belong broadly to the territory in which such entities operate .At Community level, the designations have been governed by Council Regulation EEC n.2081/92 that includes:
1 ) The achievement of production volumes sufficient to meet a demand that we assume tends to increase .
2 ) The advertising of the product.
3 ) The identification of appropriate sales channels.
